I bought this old console table off a local buy/sell/trade page from a friend. I was thrilled to bits that I was the one to get it, but when I picked it up, I have to admit, I was taken aback some. I knew it was in bad shape, but I didn’t realize how bad until I saw it in person. Still, I left my money under the door mat, loaded it in the trunk and wondered what the heck I was going to do with my new disaster. I knew it had potential. I loved the lines and the details, but the top was practically falling off and the wood was just in sad, sad shape.

…and the drawer…pen explosion maybe!?

Well, instead of trying to fix her, I decided to roll with it. Rather than patch and perfect, I went with embracing everything that was absolutely imperfect about this piece and used every last dent and ding to my advantage. The chippy, crackle paint finish was exactly what it needed! Truth? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! A little update to the hardware, some Modern Masters Metallic Paint for the details…

Some big cracks….

…a few diffused paint splotches…

…and strategically placed, believable paint drips (which have become my favorite thing to do. I did a beautiful tone on tone that you can check out here.)…

Remember that awful, ink stained drawer?? It is no more!! I have it a light sanding, sprayed it with Zinsser Shellac to lock in the stain and then used my favorite metallic spray paint, Rustoleum a right Coat in gold. This gold is not to glossy, not too matte, it’s just right!

And she’s done!! I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Algonquin, Homestead House Milk Paint in Cartier and Renfrew and General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Flat.
