Beat up furniture and a crackle paint finish

I bought this old console table off a local buy/sell/trade page from a friend. I was thrilled to bits that I was the one to get it, but when I picked it up, I have to admit, I was taken aback some. I knew it was in bad shape, but I didn’t realize how bad until I saw it in person. Still, I left my money under the door mat, loaded it in the trunk and wondered what the heck I was going to do with my new disaster. I knew it had potential. I loved the lines and the details, but the top was practically falling off and the wood was just in sad, sad shape.

Look at the state of this top!!!

…and the drawer…pen explosion maybe!?

Well, instead of trying to fix her, I decided to roll with it. Rather than patch and perfect, I went with embracing everything that was absolutely imperfect about this piece and used every last dent and ding to my advantage. The chippy, crackle paint finish was exactly what it needed! Truth? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! A little update to the hardware, some Modern Masters Metallic Paint for the details…

Some big cracks….
image

…a few diffused paint splotches…
image

…and strategically placed, believable paint drips (which have become my favorite thing to do. I did a beautiful tone on tone that you can check out here.)…

Remember that awful, ink stained drawer?? It is no more!! I have it a light sanding, sprayed it with Zinsser Shellac to lock in the stain and then used my favorite metallic spray paint, Rustoleum a right Coat in gold. This gold is not to glossy, not too matte, it’s just right!

And she’s done!! I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Algonquin, Homestead House Milk Paint in Cartier and Renfrew and General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Flat. The top coat was awesome and truly flat, BTW! I’d love to hear your thoughts, so leave me a comment, feel free to PIN and share and of course, ask away if you have any questions! xo

I was selling my townhome that actually sold in less than 2 weeks, and I really think with Dorrie helping me stage it made such a big difference! She came in and helped me so much, just when you think your house is not cluttered or everything is perfect it’s not, then someone like dorrie comes in and really has the knowledge to help you out, answer questions, stage it to look so beautiful, great with colors, furniture, you name it! I wish I could take her to Charlotre with me to stage my next home. Thank you so much for sending her my way! She is definitely amazing at her job!

Everyone that toured our house complemented the decor. Our house was warm and bright and I owe the welcoming and offers to Dorrie’s expertise. She was kind in recommending what belongings worked best for staging and made realistic suggestions for purchasing props or minimal repairs and painting. She was accessible for my questions even down to the final hours. I completely recommend Simple Southern Charm for your home decorating and staging.
