Junky to Funky Trunk! and a Review of Old Town Paint

trunkcloseup

I got this little Sears & Roebuck trunk a while ago and had intended on doing it over for my youngest son.  I envisioned something simple and classic looking.  After some reevaluation, the regretable truth was, he really didnt need a trunk.  His closet is pretty big and he has plenty of drawer space, so to add a piece of furniture to the smallest room in our house just didn’t make sense.  I’m trying to ensure that every piece I redo for our home has a practical use and isn’t only kept because it’s pretty (This has been sooooo tough for me!)   For this reason, I find that I use colors on my pieces that won’t go with our decor just so I CAN’T keep em’, LOL!

So here I was stuck with a trunk that I was feeling ho hum about and really had no motivation to refinish.  Fast forward a bit…I was chatting with our friends over at {Simply Paint It}.  They are now carrying Old Town Paints and asked if we would be interested in doing a review for them.  Ummmm, yea-aaaah!  I took a look through the colors (nope, I didn’t tell Manda, I chose without her…sorry Panda!), of which there were many to chose from.  I’ve been dying to do something in shades of green, so I selected a few colors, not knowing which would be sent to me and with uncertainty as to which piece they’d be used on.  “Well, lemme tell somethin’ to juuu!”  (In my best Ramon, from Happy Feet voice!)  We recieved three sample size colors in Green Apple, Leaf Green and Forrest Green, two glazes and a finish to test out!!!  The verdict is out…The paint was lovely.  It was just slightly thicker than other similar paints, applied nicely, did not smell and it dried quickly.  I waited 24 hours before glazing, but was pleased with the workability of the Antique Glaze.  It didn’t dry terribly fast and I was able to go over areas that I felt needed a bit more aging.  The glaze yielded a look similar to that of a dark wax and I found it could be made to look very authentically aged (take a look at area around the key hole in the pics below) or fairly light.  I was also able to use wet removal on the glaze 🙂

The minute I saw the colors in person I knew they belonged on the trunk.  I pulled it out, cleaned it up and threw cautiuon to the wind.  In all honesty, I had no real plan.  It was still really warm here, so I put down a drop cloth in the family room, flipped to Lifetime Movie Network, started painting and let the paint brush and the piece talk to me.  I know that sounds corny, but sometimes when I don’t quite have a “vision” I just start and go where the piece takes me.  Here’s the finished product and I LOVE how it turned out!

I used Old Town Paint in Green Apple, Leaf Green and Forrest Green.  I accented the raised sides of the front right and left ovals and the circular area of the decorative trim with Paint Couture! Barbados Blue.  There’s also a hint of Paint Couture! Pale gold around the decorative trim and in the circles on the front.  The entire piece was glazed with Old Town Paint Antique glaze.

    1. LOL!!! Thanks so much. It kinda just came together. Manda and I are good for starting projects, and then just seeing where they go. Sometimes that’s the best way 🙂 xoxo

  3. Your piece is beautiful. Did you use all three colors on the piece? Is the base the Old Town Paint in Green Apple and the stripes on top in the other colors. Are all the colors by Paint Couture? I have used their paint and like it also! Thanks for sharing your piece!
